SANTA FE, NM–The Ice Bucket Challenge has raised millions for ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gherig’s disease. But Americans in southwestern states can’t afford to waste the water needed to make a bucket of ice, so they’re turning instead to something they have plenty of: sand.

“I’m happy to donate to charity, and I want Facebook likes for it just like everyone else,” said Dusty Collaurs, 34. “But we live in the desert. Wasting water is a serious problem here.”

Collaurs decided instead to have his daughter pour out a bucket of sand over his head. His wife took video and posted it to on Facebook. “I admit it’s not quit the same effect. You don’t get the shivering. It doesn’t make young women’s chests more visible. But it’s definitely unpleasant.”

Collaurs has cautioned those wishing to take the sand bucket challenge not to go too far, saying “You’re not helping anyone if you bury yourself alive.”
